NHS Highland coordinated six Alcohol Awareness seminars across Highland aimed at both qualified and non-qualified staff groups, but particularly those in ward settings. These sessions were designed to raise awareness of the issues faced by people with an alcohol problem and also to look at the issues faced by staff managing patients in a ward setting who are withdrawing from alcohol. The sessions were led by a CPN(A) and a Dual Diagnosis CPN.

Positives:

  • Evaluation from the initiatives has been very positive and there have been requests for further sessions
  • Both the seminars and the HCA Course promote the ethos of Better Health Better Care

Challenges:

  • Three of the six sessions had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers
  • This was due to staff not being able to be released as service provision was the priority

Suitable for national roll out:

  • NHS Highland believe the initiative is suitable for application across Scotland
